AUSTIN COUNTY — A major theft investigation in Austin County has led to the recovery of more than 40 stolen vehicles and pieces of heavy equipment valued at several million dollars, with authorities linking a suspect to an alleged criminal network operating across the United States and internationally.

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday, October 14, that Jesus Suarez Fernandez, 60, was arrested Tuesday, October 13, after investigators executed arrest and search warrants at a property in the 2000 block of Skrivanek Road in San Felipe.
The early morning operation was carried out by the Austin County Regional Special Response Team following an ongoing investigation by the sheriff’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
Stolen vehicles and heavy equipment recovered
During the operation, investigators located Fernandez and arrested him on an outstanding felony theft warrant.
A search of the property led to the recovery of two stolen vehicles, a stolen skid steer and a stolen large generator, according to the sheriff’s office.
But investigators say those discoveries are only part of a much larger case.
Throughout the investigation, authorities have recovered more than 40 stolen vehicles and pieces of heavy equipment, including high-end luxury SUVs, sports cars and heavy machinery.
The sheriff’s office estimates the total value of the recovered property exceeds several million dollars.
Alleged theft network extends internationally
Investigators say Fernandez has been linked to a broader criminal theft network believed to be operating regionally, throughout the United States and internationally.
Authorities also reported recovering several vehicles stolen locally that were allegedly being smuggled out of the country through the southern Texas border and ports in the northeastern United States.
The sheriff’s office has not disclosed which countries the vehicles were allegedly destined for or how many may have already been transported overseas.
The investigation originated in Austin County, which borders Wharton County, before expanding into a larger multi-agency effort.
Multiple law enforcement agencies involved
The investigation has brought together several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including:
- Houston Police Department Auto Theft Division
- Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division
- Katy Police Department
- San Antonio Police Department
- Homeland Security Investigations
The agencies have worked together to track stolen property, pursue investigative leads and identify suspected criminal activity across multiple jurisdictions.
The Austin County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that cooperation between agencies has been important in identifying and disrupting organized theft operations.
Suspect faces additional felony charges
Following Tuesday’s operation, Fernandez was booked into the Austin County Jail on two additional felony theft charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities have not released information about his bond amount, upcoming court appearances or whether additional arrests are expected.
The sheriff’s office also has not disclosed when the investigation began or how many individuals may be connected to the alleged theft network.
The investigation remains ongoing.
