WHARTON — Wharton City Council will take up several major items Monday, including the city’s 2026-27 budget, a lower proposed property tax rate, the purchase of two police vehicles and new EMS agreements.
The regular meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Wharton City Hall.
One of the biggest items is the city’s proposed property tax rate.
According to the taxpayer impact statement included with the agenda, the city is proposing a rate of $0.40787 per $100 of valuation, down from the current rate of $0.42411.
For a median taxable homestead valued at $164,017, the city estimates the annual tax bill would be $668.98 under the proposed rate.
That would be about $26.63 less than the estimated bill under the current rate, assuming the same taxable value.
Council is also scheduled to vote on adopting the city’s Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget.
Two police vehicles on agenda
Council will consider authorizing the city manager to purchase two patrol vehicles through the BuyBoard Cooperative Purchasing Program.
The agenda does not list the price, make or model of the vehicles.
Ambulance provider seeks permit
Another item involves Viking Enterprises Inc., doing business as City Ambulance Service, which is seeking an ambulance provider permit from the city.
The agenda does not provide additional details about where or how the company plans to operate within Wharton.
EMS agreements with ESD No. 3
Council will also consider two agreements with Wharton County Emergency Services District No. 3.
One agreement covers emergency medical services, while the other covers administrative services between the city and the emergency services district.
If approved, the mayor would be authorized to execute both agreements.
Wine and Arts Fair street closures
The Wharton Chamber of Commerce is also requesting additional street closures for the Monterey Square Wine and Arts Fair on Oct. 10.
The requested closures include:
- Fulton Street between Burleson Street and Elm Street
- Polk Street between Burleson Street and Milam Street
Other items
Council will also consider setting up committees to select companies for debris removal and debris monitoring following a major disaster.
Another ordinance would amend the city’s rules involving designated stop intersections, although the agenda does not identify which intersections could be affected.
The council is also scheduled to receive an update on ongoing city projects, review board appointments and vacancies, and hear reports from city departments including police, fire, EMS, public works and water and sewer.
The meeting will also include a proclamation regarding domestic violence.
