WHARTON COUNTY — Ken Davis Lipscombe, whose legal career spanned 57 years in Wharton County, has died. His family remembers a devoted husband and father whose humor, optimism and friendships shaped his life.
According to his obituary published by Triska Funeral Home, Lipscombe grew up in Waco, competing in football and track. He attended Southwestern University in Georgetown before graduating from South Texas College of Law in 1969 and beginning his practice in Wharton County.
His mother, Mabel Ann Davis Lipscombe, grew up in Wharton. His grandfather, William Grant Davis, served as a judge there.
The State Bar of Texas records his admission to practice on May 26, 1969. His professional profile lists criminal, family and juvenile law, with his office on North Mechanic Street in El Campo. That work involved representing people through criminal proceedings, family matters and cases involving young people.

His work reached Texas’ highest courts. A 1980 Court of Criminal Appeals opinion lists Lipscombe alongside El Campo attorney Richard L. Manske in a capital murder appeal. Nearly four decades later, Texas Supreme Court records named him among attorneys representing a construction company in a proceeding filed in 2018.
Those records reflect a career that extended from criminal defense to civil litigation, with work appearing in state appellate proceedings across decades.
Away from court, his family described a skilled poker player, storyteller and loyal friend who rarely held grudges and found reasons to laugh through difficulties. An hour before his passing, he was visiting and laughing with loved ones.
He married Susan Burrell Lipscombe in 1988. His daughters, Mandy and Chris, remembered a father who consistently showed his love and pride in them.
He is survived by Susan, his daughters, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sewell Weston and Mabel Ann Lipscombe; brother Charles Roy Lipscombe Sr.; and sisters Ann Weston Newman and Toni Kay Copeland.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Boys & Girls Club in El Campo, P.O. Box 449, El Campo, TX 77437, in lieu of flowers.
