WHARTON — Wharton County Junior College has received a $3 million grant from Houston Endowment as part of a regional effort to help more students complete college credentials and move into careers that provide a family-sustaining wage.

The college’s Oct. 20 board agenda identifies the award as a Houston Endowment Implementation Grant and lists no cost to the institution.

According to Houston Endowment’s announcement, the award is part of a three-year, $33.2 million initiative supporting locally developed plans to improve college completion and career opportunities.

The nine participating colleges are:

  • Wharton County Junior College
  • Alvin College
  • Brazosport College
  • College of the Mainland
  • Galveston College
  • Houston City College
  • Lee College
  • Lone Star College System
  • San Jacinto College

Across the institutions, priorities include stronger advising, clearer academic and career pathways, and better data systems to identify students who need additional support.

WCJC President Dr. Amanda Allen participated in the initiative’s launch and discussed how collaboration can help colleges exchange ideas and solve shared problems.

“We’re building our own community as community colleges,” Allen said.

At WCJC, the October board agenda included requests to seek proposals for two projects tied to the grant:

  • A student communication and relationship management system, with listed costs totaling $500,000 over three years.
  • A virtual new-student orientation platform, with listed costs totaling $155,000 over three years.

Both requests were listed as contingent on the grant award. The agenda alone does not confirm that contracts or purchases were approved.

The initiative builds on $500,000 planning grants awarded in 2025 to each participating college and the Texas Success Center. Colleges used that support to examine student needs, analyze data and develop their plans.

The new investment includes $32.2 million for the colleges over three years, plus $1 million over 18 months for the Texas Success Center to coordinate regional learning and provide implementation support.
