EL CAMPO — A traffic stop conducted by the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit led to the seizure of approximately 70 pounds of suspected cocaine and the arrest of a truck driver, according to authorities.

The sheriff’s office reported that on May 27, 2026, a deputy stopped a tractor-trailer traveling on U.S. 59 North near the El Campo Truck Stop. During the stop, investigators observed what they described as several indicators of possible criminal activity.

Authorities said a consensual search of the tractor resulted in the discovery of approximately 70 pounds of suspected cocaine. The driver was arrested, and both the tractor and trailer were impounded.

No additional information about the driver’s identity or potential charges was immediately released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
