EL CAMPO — Construction is underway on El Campo High School’s $46.8 million bond project, bringing major changes to the campus ahead of the 2026-27 school year.

El Campo ISD previously said work would begin the week following graduation in May. The first phase includes relocating utilities, fire and safety communication systems, and internet infrastructure.

After those systems are rerouted, contractors are expected to remove the existing subsurface and replace it with select fill to prepare the site for new construction.

The project includes approximately 90,000 square feet of new facilities, including general classrooms, fine arts spaces for band, choir and dance, culinary arts classrooms, a new cafeteria and kitchen, a library, special education areas and administrative offices. Some portions of the existing campus will also be demolished.

The district said the new building was in the final stages of schematic design, including decisions on building materials, colors and finishes. Construction drawings are expected to be released for bidding, with the El Campo ISD Board of Trustees anticipated to consider a Guaranteed Maximum Price this fall.

El Campo High School will operate in a modified layout during the 2026-27 school year while construction continues.

The construction zone includes the central portion of the campus between the science building and auditorium, the area between the library, C Building and auxiliary gym to A Building, and the space between A Building and the competition gym.

A project registration filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation lists the estimated cost at $46.8 million and the project size at approximately 95,000 square feet. The filing describes the work as demolition, renovation and new construction of the El Campo High School campus.

The state filing lists an anticipated completion date of Aug. 30, 2027.
