WHARTON COUNTY — A 61-year-old man died Thursday evening after a train versus pedestrian incident near Business 59 and County Road 222, according to the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to the area at approximately 8:18 p.m. on August 6 following reports of a train versus pedestrian accident. Fire and EMS personnel also responded to the scene.
When deputies arrived, they located a deceased male, later identified as John Muniz, 61.
Justice of the Peace T. Drapela responded to the scene and conducted the inquest, a standard procedure in unattended deaths to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the events leading up to the incident, including how the pedestrian came to be on or near the railroad tracks or which railroad company was involved.
The Wharton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing. No additional details have been released at this time.
