WHARTON — Wharton County Junior College has named Dr. Marcus Sims II as the new medical director of its Emergency Medical Services program.
Sims began serving in the position on Sept. 1, according to WCJC. The college said the appointment comes as enrollment in its EMS program continues to grow.
WCJC EMS Program Director Karl Johnson said Sims’ experience in emergency medicine and prehospital care will help strengthen the program.
“Our program has a growing enrollment, and our instructors are becoming more creative and innovative for student success each semester,” Johnson said.
Sims is an emergency medicine physician with experience overseeing both hospital emergency departments and EMS agencies.
He currently serves as South Houston Regional Medical Director for Integrative Emergency Services and as a site medical director for CHI St. Luke’s Health Brazosport and CHI St. Luke’s Health Sugar Land, according to WCJC.
Sims also serves as a Senior EMS Medical Director with BEST EMS, where his responsibilities include medical direction for agencies including Central EMS, Lake Jackson EMS, Stafford Fire Department and Portland Fire Department.
His educational background includes an undergraduate degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and a medical degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He later completed an emergency medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Sims is also involved with the Texas College of Emergency Physicians, where WCJC says he serves as president-elect and an American College of Emergency Physicians councilor.
The WCJC EMS program prepares students for careers as emergency medical technicians and paramedics, providing training for professionals who respond to medical emergencies in communities throughout the region.
