EL CAMPO — Rising water costs are changing how one Wharton County rice farmer operates, leading him to expand his farming operation beyond Texas.
Dillon Berglund, a Wharton County Farm Bureau member who grows commercial and seed rice in El Campo, told Texas Farm Bureau that drilling a new water well in the area can cost more than $1 million.
Those expenses helped drive his decision to expand into Louisiana, where surface water is available and water costs are nearly half of what he pays in Texas. Berglund is now in his second year of farming there while continuing his Texas operation.
