EL CAMPO — The El Campo Ricebirds moved up to No. 7 in the Class 4A Division I state football rankings after a dominant victory pushed their record to 4-0.
El Campo climbed two positions from No. 9 in the Week 5 rankings released by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and distributed by The Associated Press.
The move followed El Campo’s 62-7 homecoming victory over Sweeny on Friday. It was the Ricebirds’ third win this season by at least 41 points.
Through four games, El Campo has scored 187 points while allowing only 34. The Ricebirds are averaging nearly 47 points per game, while their opponents have averaged fewer than nine.
El Campo opened the season with a 55-14 road victory over rival Wharton before defeating Gonzales 63-7 at home.
The Ricebirds faced their closest test of the season on Sept. 11, escaping Yoakum with a 7-6 victory. They responded one week later with the 55-point win over Sweeny.
According to the team’s published schedule and results, El Campo is 2-0 at home and 2-0 on the road. The Ricebirds have outscored their first four opponents by a combined 153 points.
El Campo sits behind No. 6 La Vernia and one position ahead of No. 8 Springtown in the latest rankings. Stephenville remains the top-ranked team in Class 4A Division I, followed by Lindale, Decatur and San Antonio Davenport.
Bay City, which El Campo will face later this season, moved up to No. 5 after defeating West Orange-Stark 18-7. The Blackcats’ place in the top five adds another highly ranked opponent to El Campo’s district schedule.

El Campo has a bye week before beginning District 11-4A Division I competition.
The Ricebirds will open district play at home against Needville at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2.
Their remaining district schedule includes road games against Columbia, Royal and Sealy, along with home games against Bay City and Navasota.
The Oct. 16 matchup against Bay City could carry significant district and state-ranking implications if both teams continue their strong starts.
