WHARTON COUNTY — Two Wharton County football teams remain in the state Top 10 heading into this week’s games.

The El Campo Ricebirds are ranked No. 8 in Class 4A Division I, while the East Bernard Brahmas are No. 6 in Class 3A Division II.

The rankings were released Monday by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football⁠ and distributed by The Associated Press.

El Campo Ricebirds

El Campo is 5-0 following a 35-27 victory over Needville on Friday.

The Ricebirds were ranked No. 7 last week but moved down one spot to No. 8. They remain one of only five undefeated teams in the Class 4A Division I Top 10.

El Campo has also defeated Wharton, Gonzales, Yoakum and Sweeny this season.

The Ricebirds will travel to Columbia for a district game at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.

East Bernard Brahmas

East Bernard remained at No. 6 after an open week.

The Brahmas are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in district play. Their most recent game was a 42-35 victory over Wallis Brazos on Sept. 25.

East Bernard’s only loss came against Houston Second Baptist. The Brahmas have wins over Sweeny, Edna, Ganado and Brazos.

East Bernard will host Tidehaven at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.

Wharton Tigers

The Wharton Tigers are not ranked in the Class 3A Division I Top 10.

Wharton is 0-5 after losses to El Campo, Fort Bend Willowridge, Wallis Brazos, Van Vleck and Houston Sterling.

The Tigers will begin district play on the road against Hempstead on Friday, Oct. 9.

Boling Bulldogs

The Boling Bulldogs are also not ranked in the Class 3A Division II Top 10.

Boling is 2-4 overall and 1-1 in district play. The Bulldogs defeated Weimar and Van Vleck but lost to Ganado, Hallettsville, Shiner and Rice Consolidated.

Boling is off this week. The Bulldogs return to action at home against Industrial on Friday, Oct. 16.

Louise Hornets

The Louise Hornets are 1-4 overall and are not ranked in Dave Campbell’s Class 2A Division II state Top 10.

Louise has a win over Hull-Daisetta and losses to Granger, Flatonia, Danbury and Ben Bolt. The Hornets’ most recent game was a 52-30 loss to Ben Bolt on Sept. 25.

After an open week, Louise will host Pettus⁠ at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, to begin District 15-2A Division II play.
