WHARTON — Wharton County Junior College geology instructor Peter Anderson has received a “Stars in Our Parks” award for helping visitors learn about the landscapes and geology of two Texas state parks.

In an Oct. 1 announcement, WCJC said Texas Parks and Wildlife recognized Anderson for his volunteer work, educational programs and visitor engagement.

Anderson has spent several years working with park staff at Inks Lake State Park and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, developing activities that bring geology lessons beyond the classroom.

Those activities have included kayaking on Inks Lake and hiking Enchanted Rock’s summit trail to explore the geology of each location. He has also helped with an annual astronomy event at Enchanted Rock and is scheduled to give a presentation on lunar geology in December.

The college said Anderson has worked closely with TPWD rangers Andrew Berezin and Hannah Pickens. Berezin recommended him for the award, citing his contributions to the state parks system.

The recognition highlights the WCJC instructor’s work connecting park visitors with science through outdoor education.
