BOLING, Texas — Sixteen years ago today, on July 3, 2010, a devastating fire at the Maxim Egg Farm near Boling claimed the life of Wharton Volunteer Fire Department Captain Thomas Araguz III, leaving a lasting impact on firefighters and communities across Wharton County.

The fire was reported at approximately 9:41 p.m. at the egg processing facility on FM 442. Boling Volunteer Fire Department and the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department were among the first to respond. As the fire grew, more than 30 fire departments, around 100 emergency vehicles, and over 150 firefighters responded from across the region to help battle the blaze.

Captain Araguz entered the building alongside Captain Juan Cano and Firefighter Paul Maldonado as crews worked to locate and extinguish the fire. During the operation, Araguz and Cano became separated in heavy smoke. Cano was rescued after firefighters cut through an exterior wall where they heard him striking the building for help, but repeated attempts to reach Araguz were unsuccessful as conditions inside rapidly deteriorated.

Firefighters continued battling the fire throughout the night. At approximately 7:40 a.m. the following morning, Captain Araguz was located inside the building. The Travis County Medical Examiner later determined he died from thermal injuries and smoke inhalation.

An investigation by the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was accidental. Investigators concluded that electrical arcing from a damaged fluorescent light fixture ignited a wooden roof rafter, causing burning embers to fall onto shrink-wrapped egg cartons below and start the fire.

Captain Araguz was 30 years old and had served with the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department for 11 years. His sacrifice is remembered by the local fire service and the community he served, and his name is permanently honored among those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Sixteen years later, the events of July 3, 2010, remain one of the most significant and tragic days in the history of the Wharton County fire service, as firefighters and residents continue to honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Captain Thomas Araguz.
