EL CAMPO — The Texas Department of Public Safety office along U.S. 59 in El Campo is set for a major replacement project that calls for demolishing the existing facility and constructing a new DPS office at the same location.
The project is being administered by the Texas Facilities Commission and is identified in state procurement records as the DPS Pierce Office New Construction project.
Despite the “Pierce” name used for the project, Texas DPS officially lists the facility as the El Campo-Pierce Sub-District Office, located at 19692 U.S. 59 in El Campo.
The DPS office serves Wharton County and the surrounding area.
Existing DPS Office to Be Demolished
Project documents call for demolition of the existing DPS facility and construction of a new one-story building of approximately 6,500 square feet.
The project also includes approximately 17,000 square feet of asphalt paving on a site covering about 2.76 acres.
Texas DPS’s 2025 property records show the existing El Campo-Pierce office contains approximately 6,093 square feet. Those records also list 22 full-time-equivalent positions associated with the facility.
That means the planned replacement would be slightly larger than the existing office.
Multimillion-Dollar State Project
The Texas Facilities Commission posted the construction-management solicitation on June 19, 2026.
The agency’s current procurement forecast lists the DPS Pierce project at $4 million. The detailed solicitation materials associated with the project, however, identify an estimated construction budget of approximately $5.68 million, including construction and construction-management costs.
Because the two state project figures differ, Wharton Post is noting both rather than characterizing either as a final project cost.
The solicitation sought a Construction Manager-at-Risk, a project-delivery method in which a construction manager works with the state during pre-construction before managing construction of the facility.
The initial qualifications deadline was July 17.
Construction Could Take Nearly a Year
Project information calls for an estimated 240-day pre-construction period followed by approximately 350 calendar days of construction.
Construction is expected to begin within 15 calendar days after a formal Notice to Proceed is issued.
Those timelines are project estimates and do not establish an exact demolition or opening date.
As of now, an exact date for demolition of the existing El Campo DPS office or opening of the new facility has not been publicly announced.
The project will replace the existing DPS facility rather than add a second DPS office at the location.
