STAFFORD — A man with 13 previous convictions in Texas, most of them in Wharton County, was arrested after police say he attempted to steal several vehicles in Stafford, including one with a 10-year-old child inside.
Jeremane Middleton, 40, was taken into custody at a McDonald’s following a series of incidents near Highway 90 and Promenade that began with a crash involving an allegedly stolen BMW.
The situation unfolded when a white BMW struck another vehicle at an intersection. A 76-year-old driver, identified as Myatt Hancock, witnessed the crash and got out of his vehicle to check for damage.
Hancock said the BMW’s driver first approached a woman in another vehicle and attempted to get inside before turning his attention toward him.
The suspect demanded Hancock’s vehicle, leading to a struggle that ended with Hancock being pushed to the ground. The suspect got behind the wheel but was unable to start the vehicle.
Hancock attempted to call 911, but his phone automatically connected the call to the vehicle’s Bluetooth system while the suspect was sitting inside.
Unable to start the vehicle, the suspect abandoned the attempt and moved to a nearby Frost Bank.
A woman reported that the suspect entered her running vehicle while her 10-year-old son was still inside. The boy managed to escape and alert his mother.
The mother rushed outside, confronted the man and pulled him out of the driver’s seat.
Police said the suspect then approached a pickup truck at a neighboring McDonald’s drive-thru. After failing to get inside, he climbed into the truck’s bed.
Officers subsequently arrested Middleton at the restaurant.
Criminal History Includes Wharton County Convictions
Middleton’s arrest has a connection to Wharton County.
According to a published review of court records, Middleton has 13 previous convictions in Texas, with most of those cases originating in Wharton County.
His criminal history also includes two recent cases outside the county. In June 2026, Middleton pleaded guilty to a theft charge in Fort Bend County and a charge of attempting to tamper with evidence in Harris County.
The specific offenses and dates associated with his previous Wharton County convictions have not been independently verified by Wharton Post.
BMW Reportedly Stolen Minutes Before Crash
The vehicle involved in the initial Stafford crash was also connected to an earlier theft in southwest Houston.
Houston police said the white BMW had been stolen from a bank parking lot just minutes before the crash.
The vehicle’s owner reported that he had gone inside the bank when a man entered his BMW and ordered two passengers out.
The vehicle later appeared at the Stafford intersection, where the series of attempted vehicle thefts unfolded.
Middleton remained in the Fort Bend County Jail as of Tuesday, September 15. His current custody status, the charges filed in connection with the latest arrest and his bond amount have not been independently confirmed.
An arrest is not a conviction. Middleton is presumed innocent of the new allegations unless proven guilty in court.
