WHARTON COUNTY — An El Campo man previously charged in a child sexual assault case investigated by the Texas Attorney General’s Office has been booked into the Wharton County Jail.
According to Wharton County Jail records, Robert Lee Gonzales, 48, was booked at 12:10 p.m. on July 2, 2026, on a bench warrant. Jail records do not identify the underlying case associated with the warrant, and no bond information was listed.
Gonzales first made headlines in 2019 when the Texas Attorney General’s Child Exploitation Unit announced his arrest on three warrants for sexual assault of a child following an investigation that began with a CyberTipline report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
According to the Attorney General’s Office, investigators alleged Gonzales uploaded child sexual abuse material to a social media account. After executing search warrants and examining digital devices, investigators reported finding communications involving two children that detailed sexual assaults, along with images of child sexual abuse material.
The Attorney General’s Office said both children were identified and interviewed, and each reported being sexually assaulted by Gonzales.
At this time, Wharton Post has not confirmed whether the bench warrant that resulted in Gonzales’ current booking is connected to the 2019 criminal case or another court matter. Court records currently available through the jail do not identify the cause number or the reason the bench warrant was issued.
